Erich Hermès, Ein Genfer Künstler der Moderne
Author: Philippe Clerc
Contributor(s) :
Preface: Niklaus Manuel Güdel,
Foreword: Lorraine Aubert
Erich Hermès (1881-1971), known for his work as a poster artist and for his architecture-integrated decors, is one of Geneva's most important painters of the first half of the 20th century. A close friend of Ferdinand Hodler, whose work had a profound influence on his early years, he moved towards New Objectivity and adopted a style that was to be his own and that he would develop throughout his life. Although Hermès favored monumental art, he never abandoned easel painting, in which he expressed himself with the same sensitivity, whether painting a battle scene or a portrait of his two children. In addition to Switzerland (where he lived in Geneva, Valais and the canton of Uri), he frequently visited Paris and Spain, destinations that were to have a major influence on his work.
